Las Vegas - Is Las Vegas Really a World City?
|
Session #: 047-39
Presenter(s): Panel Session Length: 1:15 hr.
Program: 2007 ULI Fall Meeting Date: October 24-26, 2007
The slogan "What happens in Vegas . . . Stays in Vegas" signals a shift in how Las Vegas positions its tourist trade. The city is returning to its roots by emphasizing decadence after having tried to lure families. But Las Vegas' new Rat Pack-inspired image of an inward- focused party town masks the major outward impact Las Vegas has on the U.S. and world economies. Las Vegas has also emerged as a major deal-making center. Because it is such a fun place and has significant hotel and meeting space, it attracts the nation's largest trade shows. The irony is that what happens in Las Vegas, arguably reaches well beyond the city in terms of business activity. This session argues that Las Vegas is a world city—but the city has not reached this status by traditional means and its form of exchange is not easily captured in conventional data that measures beyond economic activity. In a world where face-to-face interaction still matters—and may be even more important than ever—Las Vegas offers world-class venues for people to meet and do business.
